Roebuck Bay stretches 90 kilometres along Broome's northwestern shore, a tidal basin so shallow that spring low tides expose eight kilometres of mud flats studded with stromatolites — living colonies of cyanobacteria identical to organisms that oxygenated Earth's atmosphere three billion years ago.
The bay's extreme tidal range, reaching nine metres during king tides, creates a dynamic seascape where sandbars vanish and re-emerge twice daily, and the turquoise water shifts from ankle-deep to navigable channels within hours.
Commercial sunset cruises began operating in Roebuck Bay during the early 1990s, coinciding with Broome's transition from a pearling outpost to a tourism hub. The bay's calm, protected waters and westward orientation made it ideal for evening catamaran departures, and operators quickly discovered that passengers could witness snubfin dolphins — a species endemic to northern Australian waters and only formally described by science in 2005 — feeding in the shallows as the sun descended. Today the bay supports a resident population of approximately 120 snubfin dolphins, alongside Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins and seasonal humpback whales migrating between Antarctic feeding grounds and tropical calving areas.
The cruise experience centres on the convergence of geology, marine biology, and atmospheric optics. Broome's latitude — 17 degrees south — places it within the tropical dry belt, where humidity remains low during the April-to-October dry season and airborne dust particles from the Kimberley's red pindan soil scatter light into vivid orange and crimson bands. As vessels depart from the Town Beach jetty or Streeter's Jetty, passengers cross water rarely deeper than five metres, the seafloor visible beneath the hull, dotted with sponge gardens and occasional sea turtles surfacing to breathe. The bay's geological history as a drowned river valley means the shoreline is fringed with mangrove forests — Avicennia marina and Rhizophora stylosa — whose exposed root systems provide nursery habitat for juvenile fish and mudskippers.
Most sunset boat tour Broome operators time departures to coincide with the final two hours of daylight, allowing passengers to observe the bay's wildlife during peak feeding activity before the sun reaches the horizon. The spectacle unfolds in stages: dolphins arc through copper-tinted water, ospreys return to mangrove roosts, and the light drains from saturated blue to deep violet as the solar disc flattens and disappears into the Indian Ocean.
